Tor Socks5 Proxy Installation

Probably it is best to install this in a container (like LXC or Docker) on your system using a Linux LTS version because of the support.

Installation

Add source list and keys

The $(lsb_release -cs) inserts the current code-name of the Linux release.

echo "deb http://deb.torproject.org/torproject.org $(lsb_release -cs) main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/tor.list
echo "deb-src http://deb.torproject.org/torproject.org $(lsb_release -cs) main" >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/tor.list
gpg --keyserver keys.gnupg.net --recv 886DDD89
gpg --export A3C4F0F979CAA22CDBA8F512EE8CBC9E886DDD89 | apt-key add -
apt update
apt install tor deb.torproject.org-keyring

After this the Tor package(s) are updated with the regular system update.

Make accessible from the out side

Normally the proxy is only accessible from localhost.
To make it accessible from the LAN edit the followiong file.

editor /etc/tor/torrc

Add the following line to the configuration file.

SocksPort 0.0.0.0:9050

Start chrome browser using the socks5 proxy

This command starts the Chrome browser in incognito mode using a different profile in the /tmp directory and opens the piratebay union in an application window.

google-chrome -incognito \
    --proxy-server='socks5://10.0.3.218:9050' \
    --user-data-dir=/tmp/chrome-tor-proxy \
    --app='http://piratebayztemzmv.onion'
